In-Custody Death – December 12, 2023 On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 24-year-old Jonathan DeJesus Hurtado, of Shasta Lake, CA.

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at approximately 4:27 AM, correctional deputies at the Shasta County Jail were conducting routine welfare checks and discovered an unresponsive inmate in their cell. Staff immediately began life saving efforts and the subject was transported to a local hospital where they were declared deceased at 5:20 AM.
